Vintage Rek-O-Kut turntables were precision made, but had rumble producing motors, and lack of speeds.

Replace that  noisy motor with a quiet motor and an accurate multi-speed controller.  Rumble will disappear, and modern convenience will enter.

The update kit supplies a new motor, adapter plate, and  speed controller.  Motor feedback keeps the speed of the turntable constant regardless of  stylus pressure. Obtain speeds from 33 RPM to 90 RPM, and even a pitch control. 

Calibration of all speeds is performed easily and conveniently at the rear of the controller.  We supply a cable that can be routed from the box  to the motor.  Soldering to the motor terminals will be required.

The adapter plate fits many models of Rek-O-Kut belt-drive turntables, such as the K-33, and the NL33.  It may be adaptable to fit many other 12 inch platter turntables.  For those who have rim drive models (platter must be straight, not beveled as the later Rek-O-Kut B-12), we can supply a smaller, round plate.  This will require you to custom mount it on the deck about 8" from the spindle. You will have to improvise with some of the hardware to adapt to your deck. 

Belt tension adjustment is no longer necessary as you will use a rubber belt. 


Permanent mounting of the speed controller box, while not absolutely necessary, requires drilling two holes in the deck to accept 6-32 screws.  The screws screw into the box's bottom.  Because of the varying thickness of decks, the selection of them left to the user.  Click here for instructions.

Mounting a vintage Rek-O-Kut bearing cup to a wooden plinth can be daunting, as the small dimensions involved can result in splintering.

A solid metal plate is much more stable.   This plate is perfect for rebuilding a vintage Rek-O-Kut turntable onto a wooden plinth.  Example:

CARTRIDGE ALIGNMENT PROTRACTOR

To properly mount a phono cartridge, you need to be able to position it so that it remains  tangent to the record grooves at all diameters.  This gauge helps you to mount the cartridge to the headshell for the best compromise.  This protractor is designed for records from 7 inch to 16 inch diameters.  All other gauges are made only for 12 inch LP records.

Here is how it is used:  Determine which size records will be played most.  Place the gauge on the turntable with the hole over the spindle.  Place the arm end with the cartridge on the gauge and use the two selected diameter locations.   With the stylus point at the designated dot on the gauge, and with the cartridge mounting screws slightly loosened, reposition the cartridge body such that it is as parallel as you can make it to the lines on the gauge, i.e.,  tangency to the record's radius.  You can also twist the body side to side.  Check at both minimum and maximum record diameters that you will be using most.   This is always a compromise.  Then tighten the cartridge mounting screws.

Another hint:  Start with the cart in the middle and straight.  See what it takes at both radii extremes.  Then try to figure out what an in-between orientation would be and adjust its position for that.

REK-O-KUT®  RUBBER TURNTABLE MAT

Our new turntable mat fills the gap in available turntable mats.  If you have looked around, you will find rubber mats difficult to find. 

It can protect your records, and absorb vibrations induced into the record by external forces.  It especially counteracts outer edge Groove Guard,  which is built into almost all LP records, but was introduced for old record changers.  Groove Guard elevated the playing surface to prevent a stack of them from rubbing surfaces.   This can make the disc behave as a microphone diaphragm.  Conventional mats let Groove Guard raise the disc surface area permitting it to go undampened, thus facilitating acoustic feedback.  Acoustic feedback can dramatically alter sound quality.

Our design allows for improved support of 7", 10" and 12" discs.  Our mat is made to rigid design requirements.  Looks are similar to that of the Technics pro-line.  This mat not only works well but looks great.  See a customer's use.

JUDGE ITS POTENTIAL BENEFITS:

Replacement turntable mats are becoming increasingly difficult to find.  This one is a stiff felt turntable mat that can fit almost any turntable.

You can use it to fit over your acrylic platter if placing a record on a  hard surface disturbs you.  You can also use it as a "slip mat," for fast cuing and instant sound.     We actually managed to trim one to fit a Garrard Type A record changer, which requires a large center hole.  So, it can serve many applications.

REPLACEMENT SLEEVES FOR WESTMINSTER LAB SERIES LP'S

Westminster LAB Series LPS were audiophile mono records made in he early to middle 1950s and had superior sound.  The cut the record so that most of the groove area was confined to the outer area of the surface, leaving a large uncut are before the label.  This reduced inner groove distortion.

They had no conventional jacket, but a folded open cardboard carrier in a heavy plastic, zippered, heavy plastic sleeve.  Their notes were little booklets authored by the editor of Audio Magazine.  The big problem with them was that the  plastic sleeve often disintegrated, and might stick to the carrier. 

These are heavy plastic envelope-jackets of similar gauge, but have a flap on top, and not a plastic zipper.  They make excellent replacements for these great recordings.

REK-O-KUT®  DUST BUG

 12" OR SMALLER RECORD CLEANER / STATIC ELECTRICITY REMOVER

The DUST BUG is an arm with a carbon fiber brush that cleans records while they play.  Its carbon fiber brush discharges the record of static electricity, eliminating annoying discharges and pops.

Built mostly of metal parts, it can be adhered to the playing deck with its self-adhesive base.  It works with platters up 1-1/8 inches (29 mm) in height.  Height is adjusted by a thumbscrew, and its downward pressure by a sliding weight.  Best  mounted  near the edge of the platter, best on an upward projection opposite the play arm.  Included is a 39" (1M) ground wire for connection to the turntable's chassis or ground connection.

Note: If used on a turntable accepting 16" discs, you may have to remove the vertical post or the entire mounting.  Mounting its base as low as possible on the deck is recommended if possible.

THE SUPER EXSTATIC  
                            A  RECORD DISCHARGER AND CLEANER


The Super Exstatic record cleaner is designed to remove not surface dust, but the dust trapped deep in the record groove. It contains thousands of anti-static carbon bristles. The two rows of carbon bristles are supported over the record surface by a velvet pad centered between the carbon brush bristles, maintaining them straight so they can dislodge dust and debris from the groove.

Pressure need not be applied, but only sweeping in the direction of groove travel and off the disc. There is no need to push down on the record. Just support the brush and let the Super Exstatic’s own weight do the work.
 

The cleaner comes with it's own support stand which can be mounted on a wall or cabinet and can also double as a bristle cleaning tool.  Swipe the stand back and forth across the carbon bristles to remove the dust and avoid hand oils.  Blow or brush the velvet pad clean as required.

This small and handy brush has a velvet covering with a deep pile to reach the bottom of almost any record.  Its fine fibers can easily penetrate both microgroove, LP records, as well as, vintage 78s and radio transcriptions.  It has a round cleaning end, so you can rotate the the brush slowly as the record turns below, and scoop out dust and debris.    Recommended for light cleaning & general use.  Can be used wet or dry.

REK-O-KUT COARSE-GROOVE CLEANING BRUSH

FOR 78 RPM AND RADIO TRANSCRIPTIONS

The Rek-O-Kut Coarse-Groove Record Cleaning Brush uses fine nylon bristles to penetrate deeply into the grooves of vintage 78s and radio transcriptions.  Resilient, securely anchored bristle tufts are resistant to chemicals and provide thorough scrubbing, without scratching.  Designed for the hand, it has excellent grip.  The robust bristles can dislodge stubborn debris that brushes designed for LPs cannot.

SOFT BRISTLE BRUSHES DON'T WORK!

You may hear distortion from records or gross channel imbalance or both and
assume that the stylus has gone bad, or been chipped.  We find that, for nearly
100% of all customers reporting these problems, it is a buildup of detritus on
the stylus tip itself.  This can be very difficult to remove.  Contrary to common
belief, a brush with soft and delicate bristles is not effective in cleaning styli.
Some have used XACTO knives to chip it off!  You need a brush with fine, stiff
bristles.

The photo to the right shows a stylus with a common thick, sticky gunk buildup, that will produce a mushy and distorted sound.  The photo on the bottom left shows the same stylus cleaned, and will produce the best sound
possible.

 

Set the arm on the brush's bristles as if playing a record,  then drag the brush
in the direction of a record play, i.e.,  from the back to the front of the cartridge

IMPROVED MOTOR  GROMMETS  FOR REK-O-KUT AND EMPIRE TURNTABLES

IMPROVE NOISE FIGURES BY UP TO 15 DB!

Take a look at our first Rek-O-Kut turntable in 1959.  Notice the little sponge-rubber pads folded under each of the feet.  They made almost no difference in reducing the motor-induced rumble from that turntable.

Most old Rek-O-Kut, Knight and many Empire turntables have very high rumble.  In fact, Rek-O-Kuts had high rumble even when brand-new in the 1960s and 70s.  We have studied this problem and come up with replacement motor grommets that far exceed the original in performance.  These grommets are made to the exact dimensions of the originals but are made of a material different than originally used, which were too stiff.  A more compliant material provides much greater vibration isolation.

With belt-drive turntables, you can expect a dramatic reduction in audible noise that will exceed original performance.  However, the improvement may vary with rim drive turntables, whose drive puck can transmit motor vibration directly to the platter.

These 4 MF, 440 VAC capacitors are used with vintage, 1960's Rek-O-Kut series "H"  turntables, which utilized a hysteresis-synchronous motor.  They exceed original specification requirements.  Size is approx.  2-1/4" X 1-1/2" X 1-1/4".

As original physical style are no longer manufactured, mounting will require adaptation by using common metal strapping .  Existing mounting holes can usually be used.

Poor connections are the result of corrosion. High frequency loss is the result of cable capacitance.
